Bell: ‘I knew the players would respond’

13 March 2024

Lee Bell admitted he lost sleep looking forward to last night’s clash with Sutton United – because he knew his players would bounce back.

Crewe Alexandra suffered their second straight defeat at the weekend, so the visit of Sutton could not come quick enough for the Manager.

And his men got the job done with a battling 1-0 victory at Mornflake Stadium, courtesy of Elliott Nevitt’s 15th goal of the season.

Bell said: “I hadn’t slept since Saturday - I just wanted another game because I knew we'd get a response out of the players. I thought they were terrific.

“People thought we were falling off a little bit lately - but not these players! They are determined to do well; it’s an absolutely magic group to work with and I was really excited for this game

“After two defeats you could see the players were desperate not to lose. But, after that first goal went in, I thought they relaxed a little bit and on another day we might have got another one.

“We had to be really patient and withstand some balls towards our box. We showed outstanding character to come out on top in a really tough game.

“It was all about winning the game and I’m delighted with the character. We were really professional and stuck to the task well. It’s an important three points and it just given us that belief back in what we are trying to achieve.”

The victory has lifted The Railwaymen back up to fourth in League Two ahead of this weekend’s trip to fifth-placed MK Dons (Saturday, 3pm).

Bell added: “It’s about nine big performances now and we are going to need everybody. We have to embrace this and we’re going to have a real good go at it.”
