Match Report | Crewe 2 Morecambe 3

2 March 2024

  • Railwaymen edged in five-goal thriller
  • Nevitt heads 14th of the season
  • Alex drop to fourth in standings

Crewe Alexandra slipped to a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Morecambe.

The Railwaymen led 2-0 shortly after the break, following goals from Elliott Nevitt and Shilow Tracey.

But the visitors fought back through Joe Adams, Jordan Slew and Farrand Rawson.

The result means Crewe have dropped to fourth in League Two.

Now they will rest up and prepare for the trip to Doncaster Rovers next weekend.

Lee Bell named the same starting 11 as at Notts County. Zac Williams was back on the bench after a spell out with an ankle injury, but an unwell Joel Tabiner was ruled out.

Morecambe, who were able to recall fit-again striker Ged Garner, started brightly and threatened in the first few minutes when Joel Senior fired across goal.

Garner also screwed an effort wide from a good position, but it was the Alex who hit the front on 19 minutes.

The Morecambe defence hestitated when Charlie Kirk sent a searching ball over the top and Nevitt stole in, beating keeperr Archie Mair to the ball and then nodding home the other side of him.

Mickey Demetriou was hauled to the floor in the penalty area just after the half-hour mark, but the referee enraged home fans by waving play on.

Rio Adebisi whistled a shot just wide of the post, while keeper Harvey Davies dived to his right to deny Gwion Edwards just before the break.

Tracey doubled the Alex advantage with a super individual goal soon after the restart. He collected the ball wide and drove inside before lashing a brilliant left-footer into the roof of the net from 20 yards.

Demetriou cleared off the line after a Joe Adams shot looked to have beaten Davies and then, two minutes later, he headed just over from a Kirk free-kick.

On 69 minutes Morecambe halved their deficit when an Adams side-footer found its way into the net.

And on 74 minues it was 2-2 when Davies did well to parry an Adams strike but Slew was on hand to slide in the leveller.

Mair did well to claw away a Lewis Leigh free-kick, and then deny Josh Austerfield with his feet, as Crewe looked to hit back.

But on 83 minutes Senior drove down the right and crossed for Rawson to force home from close range.

Williams lifted over the bar from close range, and Austerfield and Courtney Baker-Richardson went close to forcing it home deep into injury time, but the Alex ran out time.
