Alex staff have been in touch to support Ainley - Dicker

18 January 2024

Crewe Alexandra staff have been supporting Callum Ainley since he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

The 26-year-old, who spent more than 15 years at Gresty Road before switching to Grimsby Town last summer, announced that he has undergone surgery and is now recovering, earlier this week.

Staff at Crewe – many of whom have known the attacking midfielder since he joined the club aged eight – have known of the situation for some time.

Assistant Manager Ryan Dicker said: “We were devastated when we heard the news the other week.

“The staff have been in touch with Callum and he is in good spirits. He’s had his operation and is now on the road to recovery.

“He’s a terrific kid and we wish him well. We hope he gets back to playing football as soon as possible.”

Ainley came through the Alex youth ranks and went on to make 278 appearances for the Club – including in the 2019-20 promotion season.

Everybody at Crewe Alexandra sends their love and support to Callum during this difficult time.
