Bell: ‘We tried everything to win’

4 February 2024

Lee Bell says his side gave everything to win the game at Tranmere Rovers yesterday (Saturday).

The Railwaymen used seven out-and-out attacking players during the afternoon at Prenton Park, but could not find a way through.

Crewe had to settle for their first league 0-0 draw of the season, and remain fifth in the standings.

Manager Bell said: “Tranmere are a tough nut to crack, particularly at home. I thought we were very good in the first half and got into some good positions, but couldn’t create a clear-cut chance.

“The second half was scrappy but we made the only real clear chance of the game, and their goalie made an unbelievable save.

“We tried everything to win the game – in the end we were making up formations to get as many attacking players on the pitch as we could.

“But if you can’t win, you make sure you take something away with you and we did that.”

Keeper Tom Booth made two good saves in the first half but picked up an injury and had to be substituted.

Harvey Davies came off the bench to make his first appearance since mid-December and maintained the clean sheet.

Bell added: “I thought Harvey came on and showed good character.

“The first thing he did was come and claim the ball and take the pressure off the team.

“He has been working ever so hard in training, and doing extras. He made a point in wanting to play in the (Cheshire Senior Cup) game at Macclesfield, so he got himself in position to be able to take that opportunity.”
