‘We should aim as high as we can’ – O’Riordan

Crewe Alexandra can mix it with the best in League Two.

That’s according to defender Connor O’Riordan, who says recent results and performances have convinced the squad that they should aim very high this season.

Tuesday’s 2-0 win over high-flying Gillingham made it six unbeaten in League Two and lifted The Railwaymen to third in the standings.

Crewe, who have only suffered defeat once in the league this term, have also taken points off the likes of MK Dons, Wrexham, Swindon and Wimbledon.

O’Riordan said: “(Gillingham) were towards the top; that just shows that we can give anyone a game and compete against them.

“I think we must aim as high as we can if the performances stay at this level. We can compete with anyone. Let’s see where we can go with this.

“Everyone is feeling really confident and we should just keep riding this wave and continue doing what we are doing.

“That’s 13 unbeaten at home now, a great win again and a first clean sheet of the season so everyone is buzzing in the changing room.

“We have a big game on Saturday now against Salford, we will hope for three points to send us toward the top of the league and that must be the aim.”

O’Riordan headed his first goal of the season against Gills, becoming the 11th different player to score for Lee Bell’s side.

He added: “I think all the defenders have scored now; Mickey (Demetriou) has scored about five so it was time for me to score one myself.

“It was a great ball in from Zac (Williams) and I just got over the top of my man and headed it in.

“I’m happy with that. Hopefully, I can add more to my game and that is the start of a few more.”
