Lunt: ‘We must learn our lessons’

2 October 2023

Crewe Alexandra have lessons to learn after conceding a 95th minute equaliser at Wrexham on Saturday.

That’s according to Player Development Manager Kenny Lunt, who was impressed the side’s overall display at the Racecourse.

However, he admitted the young side could have handled the closing stages better and it is something to improve on in the future.

Lunt said: “I thought the lads were brilliant and the performance was good.

“The fans were fantastic and overall, we are really disappointed not to get three points – even though before the game we’d have taken a point and kept our momentum going.

“We have to learn a lot from the end and how we could have seen the game out in a better way.

“We need to do better to stop the cross in the first place. I also thought Matus (Holicek) was fouled on the edge of the box, and then there was a free header.

"Harvey (Davies) made a decision (to not come for the cross) that he thought was right at the time, and his overall performance was good. There are a lot of things to learn from for everyone.”

While Lunt said there is work to do at the back for a side that has conceded 17 goals in 10 games, he is delighted with the haul of 24 at the other end – the second-highest in the division.

And he welcomed the fact that Shilow Tracey became the club’s 10th different scorer of the season in the 3-3 draw at Wrexham.

Lunt added: “We have got goalscorers throughout the squad and there are players who should be on more, and they are striving to get more.

“It was so pleasing to see Shilow get off the mark, he’s done ever so well and deserves more than just the one.

“Hopefully he can build on that now – we knew he was a good player and long may it continue.”
