Long: ‘I knew I was going to score’

5 May 2023

Christopher Long had no doubt that he would convert the 101st minute penalty that earned Crewe Alexandra three points against Bradford City.

The striker was under pressure, with the game poised at 2-2 and a substantial wait to take the spot-kick while Bantams players protested.

But he rifled it down the middle to make it 3-2 - and record five home wins on the spin for The Railwaymen.

Long said: “I knew I was going to score, and I was happy to get one because I should have scored more in previous games.

“I’ve just wanted to show what I’m about in the games I’ve had. I score goals in this league and I’ve proved it at a higher level as well.

“We spoiled the party for Bradford and that was the plan, it’s a great effort from the lads.”

Long, who had set up both Dan Agyei goals earlier, has hit three goals in five starts since returning from an injury which wrecked his campaign.

He added: “It just shows that if we’d have had our players injury-free this season, I don’t think we’d be where we are in the league – we'd be fighting for Play-Offs or automatic promotion. It’s just a shame what happened this season.

“It shows we have a talented group, with a mix of youth and experience. If we could keep the same squad, we could fight for automatic promotion next season.”
