U21s Report|Crewe 1 Barnsley 2

19 December 2023

  • Captain Agius gets on target
  • Nolan provides classy assist
  • Visitors win with late penalty

A Calum Agius strike proved a consolation for Crewe Alexandra Under-21s as they were edged 2-1 by Barnsley.

Captain for the day, the 18-year-old finished off a neat move involving Lewis Nolan to level the scores at 1-1 in the second half at Alexandra Park.

But the Tykes won the Professional Development League clash thanks to a late penalty.

U21s Manager Mike Jackson had a very young team at his disposal, but they nearly hit the front early on when Rhys Allport sent in a dangerous cross but Muhammed Jatta could not convert.

Keeper Mikolaj Lenarcik was largely untroubled but did make one routine stop before the break.

After the restart, Agius rattled the woodwork from a direct free-kick but, moments later, Barnsley went up the other end and took the lead through Emmasia Nzondo.

Crewe hit back when Nolan advanced cleverly before drilling across the face of goal for Agius to net.

But on 85 minutes Joe Collins was adjudged to have fouled in the box and Aaron Atkinson sent Lenarcik the wrong way from the spot.

Crewe: Lenarcik, Dancey, Sant, Robinson, Senior, Nolan, Trialist A, Agius, Jatta (Collins), Allport (Perry), Trialist B (Parry).
