Matchday Guide | Grimsby (A)

9 December 2023

Crewe Alexandra aim to extend their unbeaten record when they visit Grimsby Town on Saturday (3pm).

Lee Bell's side, seven without loss in all competitions, will be face off against ex-Crewe boss David Artell in his first home game as Mariners Manager.

The Opposition

Grimsby Town sit 20th in League Two table; five points above the relegation places.

They have not won in four outings, and went down 2-0 to League One side Oxford United in the FA Cup last time out.

The Gaffer

David Artell was appointed as Grimsby boss in November after being out of management since his time at the Alex came to an end in April 2022.

He is the only man to both captain and manage Crewe to promotions, in 2012 and 2020 respectively.

Fighting Talk

Lee Bell: ”We have just got to look after our respective football clubs. We will prepare in the same way and I’m sure Dave will be focused on introducing the things he wants to in the short period he has been there.”

David Artell: "They are going well and have got some good players who have a lot of strengths but they have weaknesses. We will know at 5pm if we have managed to stop their strengths."

Head-to-Head

The Mariners and The Railwaymen have met 68 times with Grimsby coming out on top with 28 wins. Crewe have won 25 times and the remaining 15 games ended in draws.

A recent Crewe win against Grimsby came when Artell managed Crewe with a 2-0 success at Blundell Park, with goals coming from Charlie Kirk and Tom Lowery.

Match Officials

Richie Watkins, who has handed out 62 yellow cards and 3 red cards so far this season, will referee the game. His assistants will be Mark Cunliffe and Alan Clayton, while Matt Corlett will be the fourth official.
