Boss proud of players and supporters

23 December 2023

Lee Bell was full of pride in Crewe Alexandra Football Club despite the 3-1 reverse to Barrow.

More than 7,000 home supporters came to back The Railwaymen in the last game at Mornflake Stadium of 2023.

The Railwaymen – significantly depleted through injury, illness and suspension - battled to the end in a testing clash against an in-form side.

Bell said: “I’m proud of the club tonight. The fans came out in their numbers and stuck with the players, and I’m sure they can understand what we are going through at the moment.

“I appreciate the Club helped with lowering the prices and it took me back to being 20-years-old. It was packed and we really appreciate it.

“The players tried ever so hard to get a result for those fans, and I’m proud. I asked the players to give everything and I can’t fault them.

“As a Manager, you want your players to represent your values on the pitch and they are going above and beyond at the moment.”

Barrow led through Ben Whitfield’s opener but then were able to double the lead from the penalty spot after George Ray was adjudged to have been fouled in the box.

Bell added: “The penalty changed the game. To give that decision when he’s offside and the ball is nowhere near him – the more you watch it the worse it looks.

“The players just need a bit of luck and that changed the game. I’m bitterly disappointed with that moment in the game. It’s one of the worst (decisions) I’ve seen for a long time.”
