Artell: "Always Something To Play For As A Professional Footballer"

6 May 2021

Crewe Alexandra manager, David Artell, has told the club’s official that he wants his side to end this season with a home win over Shrewsbury Town on Sunday. The Alex boss says it is strange to work our why our home form has not matched our recent away results, especially after being so strong  at the Alexandra Stadium in the first half of the campaign.

Crewe have won just one of our last six home games and in contrast, we have lost one of our last six on our travels.

The boss has already praised the professionalism of his players in the last few games because despite not having much to play for, we actually go into the last weekend of the season on the back of just one defeat in our last six games following on from the 6-0 home drubbing by Oxford United.

Ahead of the visit of the Shrews, the Crewe boss said: “I’ve said over the last few weeks that there is always something to play for as a professional footballer. There are always challenges there to meet and improve your numbers.

“If the defenders or Will wanted another clean-sheet at Bristol Rovers, Owen Dale got his assist and Callum scored his first goal of the season. Callum was the match winner on the day and that is what we want from him, so he will be delighted to be back on the score sheet.

“Can we get another clean-sheet on Sunday? Can you get that assist or another goal for your stats. That is what being professional is all about it. You are paid to be a footballer, so there is no afternoon’s off. It doesn’t work like that.

“I don’t think anyone can label that against our players. They were excellent away at Charlton and deserved more. We went to a club where we had never ever taken a point from and scored an equaliser in the last minute. That showed the character of the lads and that desire not to be beaten regardless of what was riding on it.

“We have one home game left to make sure we end the season with a win. We need to get back winning at home and take that into next season.”
