Crewe Alexandra were in action twice on Tuesday evening, with the squad splitting in two different groups for fixtures against Nantwich Town and Witton Albion.
Assistant manager Kenny Lunt oversaw the Alex group away at Witton, which saw the side record a 4-0 victory. Despite the score line, Lunt says it’s all about getting minutes into the players.
“It’s all about the minutes. We won 4-0, but it’s not about the scores. It’s all about getting the work into their legs. These games are better than training, you can’t get match fitness until you play these types of matches.
“Once you’ve played in these matches, then you’re get up to scratch for the start of the season.”
The game allowed the players to get more minutes under their belt ahead of the new season, with Lunt adding: “It was another good workout, the lads got what they needed. Not many players with knocks, and they got through it well.”
“We had a few chances in the first half which we should’ve done better with. It was a bit sunny, so it might’ve got in some of their eyes, so they say. But overall, it was a good workout. Witton gave us a good test, and they worked really hard. It’s just what we needed.”
