Lee Bell's Under 18s fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat at Sheffield United in the Professional Development League 2 match-up.
It was a a late strike by United's Frank Maguire that proved the difference, his 92nd minute effort breaking Crewe hearts after defending well for much of the contest.
The result proved a disappointment ahead of the FA Youth Cup meeting with Morecambe after the highs of beating Bolton Wanderers 4-1 the previous week.
