Artell: "No Reason Why Will Cannot Accelerate Here"

16 May 2018

Crewe Alexandra boss David Artell says that young goalkeeper, Will Jaaskelainen, has every chance of applying pressure to the more experienced ‘keepers, Ben Garratt and Dave Richards ahead of him.

Artell has been impressed with the teenagers’ performances whilst out on loan at Loughborough and our local neighbours Nantwich Town.

Although he was not given much of a chance at Chester City, the progress made by Jaaskelainen saw him rewarded with a new contract.

David told the club’s official website: “We have signed Will on a three-year contract because he has had an excellent season. He has played first-team football and the clubs he has been loaned out to have been impressed with him.

“To play over 30 competitive games as an 19-year-old goalkeeper is an outstanding achievement.

“There is no reason why he cannot accelerate here. His aim will be to play more regularly for the Under-23s and impress enough to force his way into the first-team squad. He is very focused and has great potential. It is all about him making that next step.

He added: “If he doesn’t quite get past Trig or Ben then we will look to get him out on loan again and get him that experience, preferably at a higher level than he was previously."
