"It Is Helpful To Study What England Are Trying To Do"

25 June 2018

David Artell says that the young players in his squad should be watching ‘what England are trying to do in the World Cup rather than Love Island’.

The Alex boss is eager for his players to become real students of the beautiful game and learn from the top players in world football. Artell who faced World Champions Germany as an International player for Gibraltar is taking in as many matches as he can over the duration of the World Cup.

David told the club’s official website: “The World Cup has been good. It is still fairly open and I have been watching as many games as I can. I think it is important to study the games and watch it as closely as you can and pick little things up.

“I would like to think the younger ones are watching the games and really looking at what England are trying to do rather than watching Love Island ever night.

“I think they can learn things from the top players, like I can as a manager. They can see what is successful and I just think it can broaden their horizons.

“England are playing with three at the back and I would think Steve (Holland) has a big part to play in that after what we achieved with Chelsea. It is nothing new though, England played with 3 at the back at Italia 90 after the first game and reached the semi-finals.

The Crewe boss added: “You can learn a lot tactically from watching the game and seeing what top players do to be success. It is only beneficial and helpful to study games and players that way.”
