Artell: "I Want Us To Get Our Foot On The Ball And Play"

21 August 2018

Crewe Alexandra boss David Artell wants to see his side show more courage in possession when we face Colchester United this evening.

The Alex travel to Essex aiming to record our first away points of the season after previously going down 1-0 to Newport County in our first away game of the season.

Artell is looking to see a vast improvement on that performance and has encouraged his players to get on the ball more and be more adventurous in possession.

The Crewe boss told us: “If we can play like we did against the MK Dons every week then we would be fine at this level. I’m sure we would score more often than not and we would have no problems but it is finding that level of consistency when it comes to churning out performances.

“We didn’t play well at Newport. We were okay and could have actually got something from the game there with the penalty miss - but we couldn’t pass water at times and you cannot afford to do that regardless of who you are playing.

“We were punished for that and ended up losing the game. We have to handle the physical side of things and then show some courage when we have the ball.

“The challenge will be to weather the storms that Colchester create and then put our foot on the ball and control what we want to do with the ball. I want us to play our football and if we can, then the rest should take care of itself.

“The result usually manifests itself from the level  of performance.”
