Artell: "Opportunity Knocks Every Day"

21 July 2017

Boss says that chances are still there for players to grab their chance.

David Artell says that there are still places up for grabs in his starting XI for the season opener against Mansfield Town on 5th August.

The Crewe Alexandra boss admits that he has a picture in his mind of who will start and in what positions, but he says the flexibility is there to change his opinion in the club’s remaining friendly matches.

Crewe’s next pre-season is this Saturday against League One side Bury at Gigg Lane. KO 3pm.

Artell told crewealex.net: “Have I got my team in mind? It is yes and no at this moment. What I mean by that is you would think that it has begun to take shape but the door remains open.

“If someone scores a hat-trick against Bury and then does the same at Macclesfield then they are in the team. It doesn’t matter who they are. Likewise if a defender makes four mistakes between now and the start of the season then they will go out of the team. It is as simple as that.

“I’ve told the players they will be selected on form and merit. It is up to them to prove that they are worthy of a place.

“So although you may think that the formation and shape of the team is getting there, opportunity knocks every day.”
