U23: Crewe 2-2 Bolton

9 January 2017

Sub Saunders brace enough to clinch point

Crewe Alexandra Under 23's played out a 2-2 draw with Bolton Wanderers at Reaseheath.

Former Alex man Max Clayton returned to the Club for the first time, & played 70 minutes on his return from injury for the Trotters.

Another man returning from injury, Callum Saunders, came on as a half-time substitute for Crewe & bagged a brace to help earn a draw.

Bolton took a one goal advantage into the break through George Newell's 13th minute strike, but Saunders stabbed home on 55 minutes to level matters.

From the kick-off, Dave Richards was called into action to make a superb one-handed flying save to claw Clayton's header out of the top corner.

Crewe then took control, producing waves on attacks on goal - Saunders crashing an effort off the bar one-on-one with James Yates' follow-up scrambled off the line.

But 21-year-old Saunders then did put Crewe ahead on 72 minutes, latching onto a long ball down the right channel before cutting inside & firing in at the near post.

But the lead only lasted for four minutes, goalkeeper Richards miscuing his clearance from a back-pass straight to Bolton sub Alex Samizadeh who fired into the empty net.

Crewe: Richards, Ng, Yates, Ray, Nugent, Finney (Saunders), Wintle, Ainley (Reilly), Pickering, Dale, Udoh
