Jones Deserves Scotland Call-Up

7 October 2016

Steve Davis pleased with James Jones' progress at International level

Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis is delighted that James Jones’ early form has seen him called up for Scotland’s Under-21 side.

The Alex midfielder made his debut at that age level against Iceland in mid-week and has remained with the squad for their match against Macedonia on Tuesday. Crewe will be without Jones for the trip to Luton this weekend and although disappointed to lose the attack-minded midfielder this weekend, Davis is pleased that Jones has had received the recognition.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “If I am honest, I was surprised that he was called up for the U-21 squad only because I thought that Scotland would have Premier League U-23 starlets or players from the Championship or the SPL.

“Saying that I am pleased for Jonah. It is great for him and for the club for him to get that recognition. They have watched him and seen that he has made a good start to the season and has scored a couple of goals. It is good to see them recognising that because he has been playing well of late.

He added: “I’ve not spoken to him after he played the full game the other night but I am sure he enjoyed the experience. It will be interesting to see if he plays in the second game. I’ve no problem if they travel and play the games.”
