Steve Considers Turton Switch

1 August 2016

Boss not ruling out a return into midfield for reliable Turton.

Steve Davis has not ruled out moving Ollie Turton back into midfield after seeing the positive impact he made when placed in there for the second half of our pre-season friendly at Lincoln. Crewe were 3-0 down at the interval in our latest pre-season friendly, prompting a complete overhaul of the back four.

Harry Davis and Jon Guthrie were switched into the full-back spots as Ben Nugent and George Ray formed the central partnership. That changed resulted in Turton being pushed further forward and although we didn’t improve too much in an attacking sense, we didn’t concede again.

Steve told crewealex.net: “We needed more bite in the middle of the park, we didn't have that with Jonah and Billy. We needed someone to put themselves about, win the ball back and give it which Ollie did.

"Ollie doesn't have as much quality as Jonah but you know what you're going to get with him.

"The back four, we went big, we did it when we got promoted (in 2012) and that might be the starting back four at Stevenage because as we've seen from this game you need those big players.

"You do need the height in some games, some you don't, and we do have that height but they're in the back players. We will look at each game individually."
