System Changes Gives Us Flexiblity

23 September 2015

Steve Davis says that his team can adjust quickly to system changes after summer work.

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis has told the club’s official web-site that the success of the 3-5-2 formation in the second half at Shrewsbury shows that this group have the flexibility to switch in games.

The Crewe boss and his coaching staff have experimented with different formations of the last couple of seasons and have started this season with a new-look 4-3-3. Davis is also open to playing with one off the main striker with the likes of Ryan Colclough, George Cooper and Brad Inman also capable of operating as that number 10 if needs be.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “I changed to three at the back in the second half at Shrewsbury because I thought it would help us stem the tide and it did. We had lost our way a bit after the first 15 minutes and I thought it was only a matter of time before they scored.

“I chose to match them up and it certainly helped us and it showed that the players are capable of adjusting to that in the middle of a game. It shows the flexibility we have as a team and that they can adjust to new roles quickly.

He added: “Playing three at the back could suit us because Ollie (Turton) and Stephen (Kingsley) would be ideal wing-backs, because they enjoy getting forward and we wouldn’t have to change what we have been doing with the midfielders in the summer. It would mean one of our attacking players missing out but it does give us another option if needs be.”
