Tipped To Go Down Acts As Spur

Neil Baker says Alex aiming to improve on last season

Neil Baker says that being favourites to be relegated next season only spurs the club on to prove people wrong. There were certainly not many pundits predicting that Crewe would escape the relegation drop zone at Christmas but with everyone remaining calm, another great escape was achieved on the final day of the season thanks to a super 2-1 win over Preston North End.

Baker says that being written off is something the club have to deal with most seasons and although he predicts another tough season in League One, he is confident that we can surprise a few again, retain our League One status and push on.

Baker told the club’s official web-site: “When we are tipped to go down, it just a reflection of the size of our club and who we are up against. We are in the third tier of English football and there are some massive clubs in this league.

“We wanted to stay in this league and after achieving that we want to try and improve. That is the same every season and we didn’t manage to do that last season. Saying that I’ve always said we had a bit of luck in our first year back in League One.

“We won a few games by the odd goal, especially at home. We won a few games 1-0 that could have gone either way at the time. This year it will be harder again but that doesn’t mean we want to be down there.

“We want to improve and if our young players do improve like we expect them to do, then we will improve. How much they improve we will have to see.”
