A fit again winger will be a massive boost for next season
Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis is hoping that a fit Ryan Colclough will be like a ‘new signing for the club next season. The talented winger started the season in promising form with two winning goals against Tranmere Rovers back in August and he looked like becoming a key player during the season.
Colclough then injured his hip against Accrington Stanley in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in early September and it was the start of a frustrating time for the 19-year-old. He suffered a set-back and would later need surgery to rectify a double hernia problem. His last outing came as a late substitute against Port Vale in November.
Steve Davis has revealed that Colclough will be working over much of the summer to make sure he is fit and ready for pre-season and for the start of the 2014/15 campaign. His rehabilitation and strengthening work will continue after he was forced to miss most of the season.
Steve told crewealex.net: “Ryan started the pre-season well and took that into the new season. He scored a couple of goals against Tranmere and really looked as though he was going to be an important player for us.
“He then injured his hip against Accrington and ended up needing a hernia operation. It was a long way back for him and I did expect him to be back sooner but it has settled down now and he will be working hard over the summer to make sure he is right for the pre-season.
“Ryan missed almost a whole season and it will be like having a new signing when he is back out on the pitch.
“We have never doubted his ability and talent. He has that in abundance and now just has to get himself as fit as he can to make sure he is shape for the pre-season.
The boss added: “We have high hopes for Ryan and have supported him and if he can sort everything out then he could become a top player. “
