Steve: I'm Gutted For Them Tonight

11 March 2014

Boss gives us his post-match reaction from the Banks's Stadium

Steve Davis says his Crewe side deserved to hang on for all three points after taking the lead through Chuks Aneke six minutes into the second half. Crewe looked to have seen it through only to suffer late heartbreak when Mark Ellis unfortunately headed into his own net with seconds of the 90 minutes remaining.

After the 1-1 draw against the Saddlers, Steve told crewealex.net: It was a hard pill to swallow tonight and I am gutted for them because the shape and discipline was excellent. The back four and the goalkeeper were excellent and I thought we deserved the clean-sheet but we just ran out of legs a bit in the final 10 minutes. I thought we had the won the game and Mark was distraught afterwards but the defence was superb.

We invited that late pressure on but I thought we had seen the game out but we didn't have the energy to keep the ball. We didn't keep it well enough in the closing stages but it was really unlucky because I didn't seen them scoring. We should have seen it through and won the game.

We had a few little chances in the game as well and we wanted the major chance we had to fall to Chuks. It was a terrific finish from him. Pogs had another decent chance when the cross came to him. We have got a point and it is still very tight down there. We now have three games at home so we have to make the most of that.

Everyone is disappointed and the players were down for the fans because they were terrific here but there is plenty of spirit and life in this group and we go again against Oldham on Saturday.
