Steve Davis on why he elected not to move on deadline day

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis has told the club’s official web-site of his reasons why he resisted the temptation to bring in loan reinforcements before yesterday’s deadline. With Ryan Colclough and Max Clayton nearing a return to training with the group, the Alex boss feels he has enough numbers in the group and didn’t particularly want to bring in another young player short on match fitness.

Ahead of this weekend’s crucial home game with Coventry City, the Alex boss said: “We virtually have a clean bill of health to work with. Max and Ryan are out there running and we are hoping that they will get the go-ahead to join in with the group sometime next week.

“We only have Harry out for the season and although we thought about bringing someone in it is also important to show that faith in your players. When you bring someone in they have to play and not many teams were prepared to lend players out at this stage of the season. They need the cover themselves.

“What I didn’t want is another young player, an Under-21, who has not played too much and would need time to get match fit. We haven’t the time for that with seven games left. Say, if we had taken Uche now we would have needed a few weeks to get him fit and the season would have been over.”
