Mistakes Have To Stop

20 January 2014

Manager says mistakes we make will decide our destiny

Ahead of our mid-week clash with the MK Dons, Steve Davis has told the club’s official web-site that his side need to eradicate the mistakes we are making or we will struggle to get out of the bottom four. The Alex boss could again take major positives from our 2-1 defeat to top-of-the-table Leyton Orient on Saturday, but he was left deflated after having to show for that effort or overall performance after Chris Dagnall punished us for two mistakes in our defending.

Dagnall raced in behind to dispatch a long pass from Dean Cox beyond Ben Garratt and he reacted quickest again when the ball wasn’t cleared from our penalty area following a free-kick. His two goals inside seven minutes quickly cancelled out Byron Moore’s opening goal.

Steve told “I thought we were decent again but again we got nothing from the game. I couldn’t fault the players in terms of their performance but conceding goals has been our Achilles heel all season. We haven’t kept the ball out of our net enough and that is going to be the deciding factor if we are going to stay up or not.

“We need to be tighter and limit the chances the opposition get. Saying that I think we restricted Orient to three chances and they have scored twice so they will be delighted with that ratio.

“We have been better at limiting the opportunities but our own mistakes have let to our downfall against a very good side. We lost our concentration for seven minutes and Dagnall punished us. We knew what he is like and how clinical he can be, because he has scored goals in the Football League for many years.

The boss added: “I was disappointed because I felt we would get something from the game. I was confident in the group and it didn’t fall for us but we didn’t help ourselves either with the goals we gave away.”
