Max Clayton with only goal as James Collins' Under-21s win the Professional Development League 2 Final
A wonderful strike from Max Clayton just 52 seconds into the second half gave Crewe Alexandra’s Under-21 victory in the final of the Professional Development League Two Final against Queens Park Rangers.
Clayton collected a low cross from AJ Letich-Smith before spinning sharply and volleying past Rangers keeper Joe Lumely. His clinical and technical finish rounded off a really swift break from the Railwaymen with Bradden Inman and Billy Waters also involved in the build-up. It was Clayton's first goal at any level since he returned from the fractured ankle he sustained against Wycombe in the FA Cup.
Crewe had the better of the chances during the 90 minutes with Leitch-Smith forcing a smart save from Lumely on the hour mark and Billy Waters and James Jones also being foiled by the home goalkeeper.
Waters, who has scored an impressive 15 goals for the Under-21s this season, also went awfully close to making it 2-0 but his shot was parried on to the post.
Crewe: Phillips, Bailiee, Ng, Jones, Ray (c), Mellor, Waters, Evans, Leitch-Smith, Clayton, Inman.
