Guthrie hoping to hang onto the left back shirt after first start of the season

Jon Guthrie has told Crewe Alex Player that he is hoping that his start at Oldham last weekend won’t be another one off and that he can go on and secure that left-back spot going forward. Guthrie made his full debut away at Bournemouth last season and would have most likely featured again towards the end of the season if it had not been for an untimely injury.

Following an injury to Gregor Robertson, the former Pewsey Vale defender was given the confidence boost of starting ahead of the more experienced Kelvin Mellor in last weekend’s draw at Boundary Park.

Guthrie is now firmly focussed on building on his opportunity and is likely to keep his place for the weekend clash with Gillingham.

Jon told Crewe Alex Player: “It was a nice feeling to get a chance because it shows that the manager and the staff have confidence in you to step up into the first-team.

“It is a mixture of emotions, there is a tidy bit of nerves but it is more the excitement of it and the fact that you have done enough to warrant a place in the team.

“I thought I have been putting the performances in for the Under-21s and training well, so I was delighted to get the chance. Now it all about working hard to improve and hopefully I’ve done enough to keep my place for the weekend game against Gillingham.

“That is my aim now. I want to do as well as I can so I can make that position my own.”
