Need To Be Solid

Gaffer unhappy with 'silly goals' going into our net

Steve Davis says the club’s fortunes will only change once we return to being solid at the back. The Alex manager is disappointed with our goals against column this season, conceding three more at Gresty Road on Saturday now means that we have conceded 21 goals in our nine league matches.

For someone who prides himself on being defensively sound, that is not good enough and he is disappointed to have the worst defensive record in League One. He is looking for us to be more solid throughout the team and is certainly not blaming just the back four or the goalkeepers for our minus 13 goal difference.

Steve told crewealex.net: “We can try changing the way we play or the personnel but first and foremost we have to start being solid and stop conceding goals. Keeping the ball out of our net would be a major step in the right direction and then we need to create good opportunities and take them.

“We have conceded too many goals and that just isn’t about the defenders and goalkeeper. It involves everyone.

“We have conceded goals due to individual mistakes and making bad decisions. That is something we have to improve and quickly. The three goals on Saturday came from silly mistakes. George (Ray) tried to intercept the ball in front of the forward and then Steve (Phillips) knows he should have done better with the shot.

“The second goal is a free kick because we have conceded a free-kick on the edge of our own box. That is something that can be avoided and then the third goal has come from a throw-in when Thierry (Audel) has panicked a bit and put the ball into touch.

“Those mistakes have crept in seen the start of the season and it is something we have to eliminate going forward.”
