Steve Davis wants his side to build on Preston success

Steve Davis hopes Saturday’s terrific win at Preston North End will provide the spur for more confidence and belief amongst his squad. Crewe deservedly won 2-0 at Deepdale at the weekend after executing a game plan to perfection and that first away win and first clean-sheet in the League is a timely boost ahead of two home games against Bristol City and Stevenage.

The Alex boss says that Saturday’s hard working performance to inflict Preston’s first home defeat of the new season was what he expects from his side.

Steve told crewealex.net: “I just thought the mechanics were better. We had lost the previous two games 4-0 but I thought what we were doing was improving. People must have thought I was mad but the performances improved at Notts County and Fleetwood.

“We were conceding goals through individual mistakes or a bit of bad luck but I thought we were creating more chances, passing the ball better and performing much better. I thought that if those individuals could eradicate those individual mistakes then there was something to build on.

“What we had at Preston was a continuation of that without the individual errors. We defended better as a unit and caused them problems as well. Saturday’s performance is what I’ve come to expect from them.

“The effort was there and he drive and determination to get a result was evident from all of them. We won’t be getting carried away, but I was delighted with their efforts and how they had transferred what we had done out on the training ground into the game.

It is not an easy place to go and get a result.” “We worked on the system with Chuks up there on Thursday and Friday and they executed it perfectly and it was a great win for us, especially when you consider Preston’s home record under Simon Grayson.
