Steve: "We Didn't Threaten Enough"

2 March 2013

Steve Davis gives us his post-match reaction after 2-1 defeat

Steve Davis was disappointed with his side's first half display but pleased with the response his players showed in the second half. Crewe didn't create enough chances to snatch a point against a spirited Portsmouth side.

He added: "We became a bit more direct to miss out most of the pitch because of the condition its in and we pressurised them a lot and could have nicked a point. We had some crosses cut out, shots blocked and Kelvin had one blocked on the line late on."

"We got some runners on and I was pleased with the response of the second half. Their attitude was spot on.

"We weren't clinical enough and that has been the case for much of the season. We very rarely score more than one goal and when you are chasing a 2-0 that becomes difficult. We need that poacher who can take a goal.

"We didn't defend the two goals well either and we had a mountain to climb being 2-0 down at half-time. The crowd let us know what they thought at the break and rightly so. We needed more effort, drive and ideas. I changed it at half-time and pushed Max and Pogba further forward with AJ working in behind. They all came into the game a lot more and had more of an influence.

Following the 2-1 defeat, Steve told the club's official web-site: "First half, Portsmouth were the better side and had the better of the chances. We found it difficult to pass the ball on the pitch and we couldn't link the play through Chuks Aneke or AJ Leitch-Smith and we stood off them a bit and let them play.
