Davis: "Always A Challenge"

Steve Davis on why summer recruitment is always challenging

Steve Davis says working within the constraints of a strict budget is a challenge that should face the majority of lower league managers.

The Crewe Alexandra boss knows that the club hierarchy will never allow the future of the club to be in jeopardy by over spending, especially on players’ wages. This can obviously lead to Crewe missing out on potential transfer targets, but Davis says that the way the club is run remains the right way, especially in the recession.

Steve told the club’s official web-site:  “The budget has not changed and it is what we have to work with. We know that. We know what the constraints are.

“We don’t complain about it or really talk about it. It is just the way it is. It can be frustrating at times because we cannot afford to bring in established player. We have to look at the bargain basements ones and although it be tough, it is something the staff enjoy."

He added: “We are a unique club and rely on the younger players coming through. We have to work with them out on the training ground and improve them and that is the challenge we have.”
