Boss says fringe players have to perform better after poor cup exit

No-one really did themselves justice at Gresty Road on Tuesday night and Davis says they have to show more to catch his eye for the first-team. Steve Davis has admitted that he was disappointed with the showing of the club’s fringe contingent in Tuesday night 1-0 loss to Northwich Victoria in the Cheshire Senior Cup. The Alex boss says he was looking for some individuals to push themselves forward for first-team contention and impress enough to possibly win themselves new deals.

Steve told crewealex.net: “It wasn’t too inspiring on Tuesday against Northwich and I was disappointed. None of them did that well and Northwich worked hard and deserved to go through.

“I wasn’t too disappointed with the result because it is not the most important thing, but I was disappointed in the fact that no-one shone for us. This was an opportunity and they didn’t shine enough.

“I was looking for individuals to perform well and give me something to think about. That didn’t happen.  It shows that a lot of them have a bit to do. With 8 out of the 11 out of contact in the summer and playing for a new contract I was disappointed not to see that real determination.

“The excuses are irrelevant. They have got to work hard in each game and every training session. It is not rocket science. Neil (Baker) questioned the mentality of some and he is right. It isn’t a physical and technique thing with them. They have got to show that they are mentality good enough to play League football. “
