Davis delighted that striker repaid his faith with winning goal at the Ricoh Arena

Steve Davis was pleased that his positive substitution to bring on Max Clayton paid off for the Railwaymen. Clayton was given the nod ahead of AJ Leitch-Smith and Ryan Colclough at Coventry and repaid that faith by scoring the winner with his very first touch. The young striker perfectly lifted a lob of over Joe Murphy to seal a superb three points against one of League One’s in-form sides.

Everyone was delighted for the young striker, who registered his first league goal since scoring the winner against Coventry City back in September.

Steve Davis told crewealex.net: “Young players breed off of confidence and hopefully Max can take that confidence on and this could be a real catalyst for him.

“He has worked really hard in training and for the Under-21s and I always think he can come on and get us a goal. Everyone was really pleased for him because there is goals in him.

“He is perfect to bring on when defenders are tired and he can exploit that space with his runs. He uses it to his advantage when the game opens up and he repaid that faith we have him again.

“We will see how he does for the Under-21s again and it is about him getting game time and building that confidence. At the moment that is what is best for him, although we are always trying to get him into the team because we know what a good player he is and will become.

“He is still young, learning his trade and he is always eager to learn and improve.”
