Davis On Mellor

3 September 2012

Steve Davis praises the return of his young full-back

Steve Davis has admitted that it was his intention to bring Kelvin Mellor back into his team once the local lad had proved his fitness. Mellor made his first start of the new season at West Ham in the League Cup and he followed that up with a consistent performance against Coventry on Saturday.

Mellor underwent surgery on his ankle and rejected the chance to join Championship side Derby County in the summer to remain at his hometown club and fight for his place.

Now back to full fitness, the former Nantwich Town starlet is in possession of the right-back spot and will take some shifting.

Steve told crewealex.net: “Kelvin hasn’t been ready because he missed the pre-season and wasn’t match fit. We had to bide our time with him and make sure he was ready to come back in.

Steve added: “It was my intention to bring in back in at right back when he was fit. He was excellent at West Ham on Tuesday and then again on Saturday, so that has been a real bonus. We know have three players going for two full-back positions and that competition is what I wanted to create.”
