Steve Davis wants to progress and possibly take Crewe back to Wembley

Steve Davis wants to progress in this season’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy competition but he says that League One survival is paramount. Crewe host an in-form Doncaster Rovers side this evening in the Northern Section quarter-final and if they get the right result then the club will be three games away from another possible trip to Wembley.

Davis stresses that his side will have to perform better than we did against Burotn Albion on Saturday, especially in the final third if we are to knock out Doncaster, who currently occupy one of the automatic promotion spots in our division.

Ahead of this evening’s cup encounter, Steve said: “It will be another tough game against the in-form team at our level. They are going well but so have we been recently.

“The players were disappointed to go out of the FA Cup at the weekend and now they have an opportunity to put it right. It is good that we have another cup game to look forward too, so quickly.

“I think it is a good competition to be involved in and the interest always intensifies in the later stages. I haven’t taken too much notice of the other games in the Johnstones’ Paint Trophy because all I am concentrated in is getting the right result against Doncaster. It is a chance to go on and play at Wembley and that is motivation enough.

“Saying that the priority is the league. We want to go on in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy but remaining in League One is paramount to us.”
