McKirdy joined Crewe in January 2018 on a loan deal until the end of the season from Aston Villa.

The 20-year-old was a scholar at Stoke City during his younger years before switching to Villa Park in 2011 to continue his development.

He signed his first two-year professional contract in summer 2016, that was later extended to 2019, but hasn't yet featured in the first team despite impressing regularly for the Under 23's.

McKirdy enjoyed senior EFL experience on loan at Stevenage for the first half of the 2016/17 season, scoring two goals in 13 appearances for Boro before injury cut short his spell.

The youngster came off the bench to score for Crewe on his debut in the 3-2 defeat to Wycombe on January 20.
