Billington focused on ‘big week ahead’

22 January 2024

Lewis Billington is focused on a ‘big week ahead’ after scoring his first goal for Crewe Alexandra.

The 19-year-old defender celebrated signing a new contract in midweek by scoring his first ever goal in a 3-1 win at Barow.

The victory lifted The Railwaymen to fourth in League Two – just outside the automatic promotion places on goal difference.

But the academy graduate says feet remain firmly on the ground as the players prepare for a trip to Morecambe tomorrow (Tuesday, 7.45pm) and the visit of Salford City on Saturday (3pm).

Billington said: “It is a big week ahead so hopefully we can take another six points and stay unbeaten.

“Promotion is on the forefront of our minds and I know I have to play well to keep my place. I’m enjoying my football at the moment.

“I think we were always the better team (at Barrow), even in the latter stages of the game.

“The atmosphere in the changing room after the game was the best I’ve ever seen, so we just have to keep going.”

Billington, who has been at the Club since the age of six, headed home a Shilow Tracey cross to made it 2-1 at Holker Street.

Elliott Nevitt had earlier cancelled out Barrow’s opener, and Matus Holicek later made sure of three points with his first career goal.

Billington added: “It was a good week overall with signing a new contract and getting the goal and then the three points.

“I can’t find words to describe how good the feeling is. It’s proud for me and my family. A good feeling.”
