Austerfield: ‘The main focus is to get promoted’

19 January 2024

Josh Austerfield says he wants to be part of a promotion push at Crewe Alexandra.

The 22-year-old, who has signed on loan from Huddersfield Town until the end of the season, had a number of clubs interested in signing him.

But the midfielder was persuaded by The Railwaymen's strong position in League Two.

And the attractive, passing style of play was another key factor.

Austerfield said: “I’m delighted to be here and looking forward to the first game on Saturday.

“I know what this league is. The football suits the way I want to play and the fact we’re looking to push on was a big factor.

“I want to play games. I sat down with the gaffer and he showed me bits about the Club. From that point, I was set on coming here.

“I’m really positive about it. I want to play games and I want the team to do well. Hopefully, we can do both! The main focus is to get promoted.”

Austerfield came through the academy ranks at Huddersfield and enjoyed positive loan spells at Harrogate and Morecambe last term. He has more than 50 senior appearances under his belt, including in The Championship for his parent club.

Former Crewe midfielder David Fox, Loan Manager at Huddersfield, played a part in making the move happen. Aaron Rowe, also on loan at Crewe from Huddersfield, also provided encouragement.

Austerfield, who will wear number 25, added: “I can get up the pitch and although I’ve not got any goals yet, I’m hoping I can add that this season.

“Defensively, I get about and put tackles in and then be clean with the ball. I get the team playing.”
