EFL accolade means a lot - Demetriou

18 April 2024

Mickey Demetriou says being named in the EFL League Two Team of the Year ‘means a lot’ to him and his family.

The defender, who has been outstanding since joining Crewe Alexandra last summer, was given the accolade at the 2024 EFL Awards in London last week.

Demetriou, who has a remarkable nine goals and six assists to his name so far this term, said: “It means a lot.

“I was really surprised when the gaffer phoned me to say I’d be nominated because I feel I’ve done well in previous years and not got in.

“I never expected it and I didn’t need it either - it’s not about me and never has been. I’m only focused on how I do for the team. I’m just happy that I have been able to contribute.

“But this is a nice bonus and it’s down to everyone who helped me be in position to win it.”

Demetriou, who has made 50 appearances this season, was joined at the event by boss Lee Bell and forward Calum Agius, who were nominated for the Manager of the Year and Apprentice of the Year accolades, respectively.

Mansfield’s Nigel Clough, and MK Dons youth Callum Tripp, ultimately took those prizes but everybody at Crewe Alexandra would like to congratulate Mickey, Lee and Calum on their achievements.

Manager Bell said: “I’m really pleased for Mickey – what an outstanding addition he has been!

“He has been such an asset to us with his performances on the pitch and the way he is around the place.

“I’m delighted for him – I haven’t seen many better defenders than him this season.

“I’m also delighted for Calum; he’s had a really good season. He is still a second-year scholar and he’s a brilliant all-round person. He just wants to improve and it was good to see him there.

“In terms of myself, the Manager is the one who gets the pats on the backs or gets hammered, but me being nominated is down to the brilliant work of the players and staff.”

EFL League Two Team of the Season 2024: Arthur Okonkwo (Wrexham), Fraser Horsfall (Stockport), Aden Flint (Mansfield), Mickey Demetriou (Crewe), Brad Halliday (Bradford), Jodi Jones (Notts County), Elliot Lee (Wrexham), Louis Reed (Mansfield), David Keillor-Dunn (Mansfield), Matt Smith (Salford), Macauley Langstaff (Notts County).
