‘Those scenes are what football is about’ – Bell

17 September 2023

Manager Lee Bell says the jubilant scenes after Crewe Alexandra rescued a point at AFC Wimbledon are ‘what football is all about’.

More than 600 travelling supporters had made the long journey to the Cherry Red Records Stadium, but the Alex trailed 2-0 at the break.

Joel Tabiner pulled one back after the restart but the fans had to wait until the 101st for Elliott Nevitt to blast home an equaliser.

Players, staff and supporters celebrated together and Bell felt it was a good moment.

“We’ve got some verbals from people saying we looked like we had won the World Cup but people must understand that that’s such a positive for the players.

“They want the best for each other and for the club. I’m running out of words to say about us coming back from 2-0 down.

“We know we can’t keep allowing it to happen but the scenes at the end are what football is all about.

“The lads have a never-say-die attitude but I don’t think I’ll be running down the touchline too often. I’m absolutely shattered!”

Though the result made it three games unbeaten for Crewe, who have only suffered one defeat, Bell was frank about the performance.

He added: “We were hopeless in the first half and we’ve let the players know it was well below our standards.

“They out passed us, outran us, outfought us and got more second balls. Rightly so, we were a couple of goals down.

“We made changes, some of them worked and others didn’t. But in the end, we have scored six goals and gained four points away from home in a week. I’ll take that!
