Focus firmly on points, not records - Lunt

3 October 2023

Breaking a near-three decades old record is not in the thoughts of Crewe Alexandra players as they prepare for tonight’s visit of Gillingham (Tuesday, 7.45pm).

That’s according to Player Development Manager Kenny Lunt, who says three points is the only target for the clash.

Lee Bell’s side are currently 12 games unbeaten at Mornflake Stadium, in a sequence stretching back to early February.

If they avoid defeat to fourth-placed Gills, they will have matched the 13-game unbeaten run put together between April 1993 and January 1994.

But Lunt said: “We don’t discuss records like that; we just try to keep doing what we are doing and try to win every game.

“Of course, it would be nice to keep the run going but the main thing is a good performance and three points.

“It’ll be another tough battle (against Gillingham). We have spoken about how pleased we are with the goals we are scoring, but we need to be doing better at the other end.

“We need to keep clean sheets and be capable of ‘winning ugly’ when that’s necessary.

“With Gillingham, we know we will have to earn the right to play, but we are capable of matching physical teams.

“They’ll know they are in for a tough game too because we are confident about playing at home.”

Crewe went 14 and 16 games unbeaten at home in 1995 and 1992 respectively.

But current crop have work to do if they are to surpass the club record of 28 home games unbeaten set between April 1967 and August 1969.
