Matchday Guide | Newcastle U21s (H)

21 November 2023

Crewe Alexandra will look finish their Bristol Street Motors Trophy campaign with a flourish when they host Newcastle Under-21s at Mornflake Stadium on Tuesday (7.45pm)

Lee Bell’s side are already eliminated from the competition after defeats to Port Vale and Wrexham but he has set out individual and collective objectives to his players.

The Opposition

Newcastle U21s have gained one point from their opening two games which means they cannot progress from Group B. In their league campaign, they sit 17th out of the 26 teams in the Premier League 2 Division One and are unbeaten in their last three games.

The Gaffer

Ben Dawson joined Newcastle as a youth coach in 2014 and has progressed through the ranks.

He previously led the U21s between January 2018 and June 2019, guiding the side to the side to the final of the Premier League Cup and the Premier League 2 Division Two play-offs.

He then became the Academy's Head of Coaching and first-team Development Coach, before returning to the U21s earlier this year.

Fighting Talk

Lee Bell: "There will be opportunities for some players to get minutes under their belt, while others will have a chance to stake a claim to get closer to the team.

"There will also be the chance for some players who haven’t been around the first team before to gain some experience. We will take the game seriously and we want to win, thanks to the culture we are trying to breed at the club."

Match Officials

Referee Scott Tallis, who has handed out 56 yellow cards and two reds in 15 matches this term, will be assisted from the touchlines by Paul Stonier and Alex Gray. The fourth official will be Grant Taylor.
