Boss: ‘We must execute our gameplan’

14 November 2023

Lee Bell says Crewe Alexandra must execute their gameplan perfectly to progress in the FA Cup.

The Railwaymen travel to Derby County’s Pride Park for a first round replay tonight (Tuesday, 7.45pm).

The Rams will naturally start the tie as big favourites to claim the home game with Bristol Rovers which awaits at the next stage.

But Manager Bell will send his men out fully prepared and full of belief that they can get through.

“Our players were exceptional in the first game and on another day, we’d get through,” he said.

“But we have come up with a plan that we think will suit us and hopefully the players can execute it.

“There will be times when we don’t have the ball and we need the players to concentrate and fulfill their roles without the ball, and then we will be looking to do slightly different things when we do have the ball.

“There are areas we feel we can improve on that will turn the result in our favour.”

The first game ended 2-2 at Mornflake Stadium after two late goals from Derby cancelled out earlier strikes from Courtney Baker-Richardson and Elliott Nevitt.

Bell added: “Derby have got a big squad and they are able to freshen up the team, and the onus is on them for obvious reasons.

“My message to our players is that we have our own standards and values we need to make sure we live up to.

“We have to respect Derby but we should be excited to be at a brilliant stadium in front of a decent crowd.”
