Former loan man J’Neil Bennett has been given the chance to impress in training with Crewe Alexandra.

That’s according to Manager Lee Bell, who says the free agent has been part of sessions since last week.

Injury-hit Crewe are looking for reinforcements and attacker Bennett, who left Brentford B at the end of the last term, could be a potential signing if he proves his fitness and catches the eye.

Bell said: “He’s not played much football so we are trying to get him to a point where we feel he might be able to get on the pitch for us.

“We have to do some work with him and gradually build him up. We will take it from there.”

He added: “There are just not that many free agents out there. Of the few there are, some don’t really need to come back into football while in a couple of other cases it has been hard work to get players to come and train with us.  

“We are not overly-concerned – the break at the weekend will do us good and hopefully allow us to get one or two closer to a return to action.”

Bennett, 21, spent a couple of months with Crewe in 2021. He scored once in 11 outings before an injury cut short the loan from Spurs.

A skilful wide forward, he joined Brentford B last year but was released at the end of last season and has been without a club since.
