Women Report | Crewe Alex 2-0 West Didsbury & Chorlton

4 May 2023

  • History makers Crewe win at Mornflake Stadium
  • Emilia Edwards' brace secures the points
  • Biggest attendance of the season (1020)

A goal in each half from Emilia Edwards was enough to secure all three points in front of a bumper crowd at Mornflake Stadium against West Didsbury & Chorlton. The victory capped off a fine end to the season as The Alex secured a mid-table finish, which seemed unlikely at the midway point of the season.

From the victory over Mossley Hill, Fisher made two changes with Ella Pemberton passing a late fitness test to replace Megan Booth and Gemma Brough returning to the starting XI at the expense of Laura Pearce.

Crewe raced out of the blocks, eager to impress the huge crowd and they opened the scoring on 5 minutes when an Amanda Fallon header found Edwards and she lashed the ball out of the reach of the visiting keeper from the edge of the box.

Crewe had all the possession in the early stages and should of doubled their lead as Fallon and Pemberton came close before Laura Garner stung the West Disbury & Chorlton 'keeper's finger tips.

Again, the Alex came close as Megan Parker got on the end of a fabulous through ball from Shanice Finbow but as Parker rounded the onrushing 'keeper she could only see her effort blocked by the recovering defender.

The second half saw a change of shape from the visitors as they looked to be more solid and hit Crewe on the transition.

However, Fisher's side started the second period just as brightly as the first and had a goal ruled out in the 58th minute after Fallon was ajudged to have fouled her opponent in the lead up to the goal.

The away side should have equalised in 75th minute as a ball into the box was not cleared but the visitors blazed their effort over the bar from close-range.

Crewe made changes with Emma Heath, Pearce and Booth replacing Garner, Fallon and Brough. Although Crewe remained in control West Dids were a continous threat when given a chance but the game was put beyond them on 85 minutes as Parker was roared on by the home fans after she dribbled down the left-hand side of the pitch, weaving between her opponents before pulling the ball back for Edwards, who grabbed her second of the game from close-range and killed the game off.

A fantastic day both on and off the pitch as the Alex complete the season second in the form table from their final six games of the season.

Speaking in his post-match interview, Matt Fisher said: "The girls were fantastic and but for a bit more quality in the box we could have ran away with it. It was a big game for different reasons but the girls embraced that and just played football the way we know they can."

"Thank you to every supporter that came down and made the day so special. We definitely gave you a game to enjoy and you gave us a record breaking attendance that for a club at our level is absolutely superb."
