Boss gives insight into transfer plans

25 May 2023

Lee Bell wants to have the majority of his new-look squad together before players return to full training – but says he will not rush into big decisions.

The Manager and his backroom team are working hard on summer recruitment plans, and expects to meet a potential new signing this week.

He aims to have completed the majority of his business by June 26, when the squad reports back.

However, Bell says he will not make rash decisions simply for the sake of expediency.

“We want to get to the first week of pre-season and have the majority of the squad together,” he said.

“We are moving in the right direction and we have been working hard on it for a while.

“We know where we need to improve and we intend to hit our targets. We are looking to strengthen in all areas if we can.

“We have a player due to come up so we can show him around, so hopefully we will have some news on that. But in general, it is very quiet at this time of year.

“We need to make sure we sign the right players with the right profile. We have to be careful not to go too heavy, too soon.

“We have to spend what we have got wisely. I want players to come to the club for the right reasons; we want the right characters.

Bell made it clear that while he expects to make permanent signings, the loan market will also be important to his plans.

He added: “The loan market will be vital to us, there is so much talent out there that we’d be daft to ignore it.

“It can be just as valuable as getting a permanent player in. We have some good contacts now, locally and down south, and we’ll use them.”
