Matchday Guide | Salford (H)

10 March 2023

Crewe Alexandra take on Salford City under the lights Friday night, as they look to extend their unbeaten run to seven games.

Lee Bell’s side will be disappointed with the outcome of last Saturday fixture, as they conceded a late equaliser to Sutton United, though the gaffer will take many positives from the performance.

The Opposition

Salford currently occupy the final spot in the Play-Off places, sitting on 56 points having played 35 games, two more than eighth-placed Mansfield Town who have two games in hand.

The Greater Manchester side are on a good mini-run, winning two of their last three encounters, including a 3-1 win last time out against strugglers Newport County.

The Gaffer

Neil Wood took over the reins at the Peninsula Stadium in May 2022, having spent three years as Manchester United’s U23 manager.

A graduate of United’s famous academy, Wood took up coaching at a young age and developed many players through the United ranks, with 17 academy players making their first team debut under Wood.

Fighting Talk

Kenny Lunt (Player Development Manager): “They are one of the better footballing sides in the league. It was a really good game of football when we visited them, with nothing in it, until we had Bass sent off. Salford are always there or thereabouts in the table, they are able to mix it up and they have good, experienced players.”

Stevie Mallan (Salford midfielder): “The team’s been doing very well and it’s going to be hard to come into a team like this, they’ve been flying this season and doing very well.”

Team News

Crewe will be without defender Rod McDonald for Friday’s encounter as he’ll start his ban after being sent off against Sutton. David Amoo, Zac Williams and Christopher Long remain sidelined.

The Ammies expect to be without Conor McAleny, Richard Nartey, Ash Eastham, Ryan Watson, Jack Jenkins and Liam Shepard for the trip to Mornflake Stadium.

Head-to-Head

Salford currently hold the upper hand in past meetings, winning two of the three encounters between both sides, including last time out when the Ammies won 3-0 earlier on this season.

The Alex’s last victory against Salford came in September 2019, a 4-1 victory in the club’s promotion season.

Officials

Benjamin Speedie will take charge of the fixture on Friday night, having last officiated the Alex in January 2022, a 2-0 home defeat to Rotherham United.

Matthew Parry and Chris Isherwood have been appointed as assistant referees, with Gary Hilton acting as fourth official.
