Chairman: ‘White Paper has full support of Crewe Alexandra’

3 March 2023

Charles Grant says the measures outlined in the Football Governance White Paper have the full support of Crewe Alexandra.

The White Paper, published last week, has adopted many of the key recommendations set out by Tracey Crouch MP, who completed a Fan-Led Review in 2021.

Central to the proposals is the introduction of an Independant Regulator to oversee financial management of football.

Plans to ensure a greater say for fans in the running of their clubs, and to step up protection of club heritage, are also set out.

Mr Grant believes the measures will make football fairer and protect the long-term future of clubs.

He said: “EFL clubs welcomed the findings of Tracey Crouch’s Fan-Led Review, and now it is with enthusiasm and some relief that Crewe Alexandra and other clubs applaud the publication of the White Paper.

“Having engaged with Tracey Crouch and her team during its deliberations, and continued dialogue over many months with DCMS (Department for Culture, Media and Sport) Ministers, and our own MP, Kieran Mullan, we now similarly welcome the approach being taken by the Government.

“We are supportive of enhanced regulation, alongside a reset of the game’s financial distributions.

“The introduction of an Independent Regulator will strengthen our incredible pyramid, giving investors, fans and communities confidence in the governance of our clubs, and enable them to thrive in the best leagues in the world.

“We will continue to outline that position with media and politicians alike, as the White Paper makes its way through Parliament.

“Football is nothing without its fans, and the White Paper will ensure they remain at its heart while the game continues to grow at home and abroad.”
