Lee Bell pulled no punches in his assessment of Tuesday night’s defeat at Gillingham.
The Manager was furious at the manner of the goals conceded in a 2-1 defeat, which left Crewe Alexandra 18th in League Two.
Bell said: “I’m not frustrated, I’m angry. We gifted them two goals – and the last four goals we have conceded as a team are a disgrace.
“I’ve got broad shoulders and I’ll take any criticism that comes my way, but I’ve told the players they have to look at themselves as well.
“I am trying to do things at this club to move us forward, and I will shelter the players from all types of criticism – but for things like this they have to take responsibility too.
“Their back four didn’t make an error all game, but the goals we conceded were totally unacceptable. You can’t legislate for it.
“I will take responsibility for our performances, but the players have to take responsibility too. We saw two teams with the handbrake on, scared to death to lose, and we just gifted them two goals.
“The players are bitterly disappointed and they should be. There is nothing in the games, but we are making schoolboy errors and that has to stop.
“The fans who came to Gillingham on a Tuesday night deserve better than that, they were fantastic. For them to witness that capitulation...”
